カートの部屋の壁に、友人が書いた「Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit」(カートは「ティーン・スピリット」の匂いがする) という落書きをカートが気に入り、曲のタイトルにしたと言われています。
しかし、「ティーン・スピリット」 がデオドランド剤だとカート本人が知ったのは、この曲がリリースされてから数か月後の事だそうです。
